Me and the Mrs. came here for a quick drink on a family vacation, after putting the entire family to sleep! We were just exhausted and just needed to hang out and get some "us" time. Decided to go here at 10:00 pm, only to find out that they close at 10:00. But the bar tender was the most sweetest woman we came across in ME and let us have 1 drink before closing. This review and those 4 stars are just for this wonderful lady! It's because of her me and my wife could have 1 drink in peace, with some pretty mellow music in the background. The bar was understandably empty, but has a really nice setup. I tried their House Porter beer. Had a nice smoky taste; the Mrs. tried some red wine and she looked happy with it! Would've loved to dine here too; may be next time!

I'm local and have been eating at Jack Russell for over fifteen years. The food is consistently excellent and the service is outstanding.
(5)Karl H.
I had the "Lazy Lobster", which was choice pieces of lobster removed from the shell. Linda had the same and the deserts were really good.
(5)Barry S.
Over priced, steaks were fair. Took 3 tries to get it med rare. 1 was well another still cold inside. Blueberry beer wasn't to bad
(2)Brandon C.
Lousy service. We were basically ignored. Had to blatantly ask for the check so we could get the hell out of there. Pricey, definitely not worth it. Half of the food we wouldn't even eat.
(1)Ellen C.
We picked this place based on location and reviews that gave it $$ on price. It was very expensive. Should be rated $$$. A small New York Strip for $33! Those are NYC prices. I've had better steak at the Outback for less. Even the fish and chips were $19. On the bright side our waitress was sweet. Overall the food was just average.
(2)Sam S.
Mediocre at best. Not worth the money in my opinion. Cam chowder tasted like watered down Campbell's. Keep driving into Bar Harbor and find something there.
(2)Carrie E.
Four of us came and all enjoyed our food and service. Steaks were cooked perfectly to order. Tyson was a great waiter and made our experience super positive. We would surely visit this restaurant again. Especially loved the hot pretzels!! Wine list was good too. No problems and prices were reasonable for the quantity and quality.

Not what it's hyped up to be. Food and service good but for supposingly a brew pub the beer selection was mediocre.

Victor Caron First of all, there was quite a delay prior to being seated and the layout of the building was bizarre with one stairway ascending to the second floor and another at the opposite end for descending. Once seated, we noticed what first appeared to be a water puddle under a window leading to an adjacent table. After a closer look, it turned out to be an unfinished small section of the wooden floor where someone just appeared to pour on a patch of marine grade varnish...how "Mickey Mouse"! My wife ordered a sirloin strip ordered medium-well but received it medium rare and very under seasoned. I ordered a 6 ounce filet with a lazy man's lobster which was also grossly under seasoned. The sautéed mushrooms were waterlogged, over cooked and under seasoned. The mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus were also equally under seasoned! We are very curious to determine which organization voted this place as having the best steaks in Bar Harbor! Definitely overpriced, underachieved and not worthy of a recommendation not to mention a return visit!!! Do not waste your time, appetite or hard-earned money!

We sampled all their different beers and weren't impressed. Either the beer was watered down or lacked hop flavored. We got crab cakes, but only got two for $11. The scallop salad only had three for a price of $18. The food lacked flavor.

Great steak!

We had such a great time here. We stayed across the street at the Bar Harbor Regency and thought we'd check it out on our last night. We had a few drinks at the bar and ordered some food to go. The lazy lobster/filet combo ($35) was amazing. Best lobster and petite filet was cooked perfectly. My wife got a salad with salmon on it and liked the nice sized salmon portion and said it was cooked perfectly. The staff was very pleasant and everyone seemed to be enjoying the food as much as we did. A++++++ and will definitely go back. The owners should be very proud!!

Love love love this place! Everyone in my party was very happy w/ their meal. Will definitely return. Tyson our waiter was excellent.
(5)Amiee S.
Best steak I have had in a long, long time. The atmosphere is warm and cozy and made you feel like you were in an English pub. I had the Filet which was cooked to perfection and was just like butter! The baked potato was fresh and hot and you got a hot pretzel instead of complimentary bread. We shared the blueberry creme brûlée, which was delicious but just a bit runny for a custard, but the flavor was wonderful. I've been dreaming of this place ever since. Do yourself a favor and go here.

This currently holds 1st place out of 12 restaurants for best meals on my New England road trip. The seafood appetizer platter was on point. A little bit of everything allowed me to try an abundance of items and really appreciate what seafood the restaurant has to offer. The crab cakes, scallops and seasoned shrimp was delectable. The soft pretzels with tasty spicy mustard was the best start to the meal. My dad ordered the blueberry beer and it was my favorite beer I have ever had. We also shared the Spicy Burger, the meat was flawless and the cream cheese sauce was a perfect combination to the burger. I wish I could have taken home the tartar sauce because I even ended up using it for my fries. Highly recommend it all. Don't forget the blueberry crumble (which could use a little more crumble) and vanilla bean ice cream to polish off a top notch meal. Thanks Jack Russels for a superb meal and experience while in Bar Harbor. Glad this restaurant was recommended to me by a friend or else I may have missed it driving by. Maybe the sign could use a touch up for the 2015 season.

We had a high and low visit depending on what was ordered. We really liked the beer selections and there was something for everyone. We also tried the Mojito and it needed some work (more muddling of the mint, a better balance of alcohol, etc.) but who needs the cocktails with such a good beer list. The pretzels served in lieu of bread was a great idea and we loved them. We ordered the seafood appetizer and it was delicious and appealed to all, especially the crab cakes and scallops. For those of us that ordered our steaks medium rare, the way God intended, we really enjoyed all cuts of steak and they were cooked perfectly. We had one in our party that ordered his steak medium and it had to be sent back twice to get it to a true medium, which was huge bummer for him. They make their fries in-house (and grow their own mint by the way) which is a good thing, but our family demands crisp fries (like McDonald's crisp). This level of crispness was not possible in the the restaurant's process, and they would have been better off telling the table to order the baked potato since limp fries almost caused a riot at our table. Speaking of which, for the baked potato the butter came in foil pats and the sour cream was served in plastic containers which is more appropriate for a Denny's than a steak house (in my humble opinion). The deserts were very nice, and our table ordered the blueberry crumble and the cheesecake and both were great and on the house to make up for the steak that was sent back which was very nice. Our poor server, who must have felt that we had turned on her mid-dinner, was quite nice and accommodating and the manager or owner, not sure, was super likable and came by at least twice so we could tell her how much we loved the crab cakes.

I would have to say we were disappointed with our experience. We were staying right across the street so we had to give the place a try. At least the Yankees were on. Warm pretzels and mustard instead of your basic bowl of carbs,, it tasted like any warm pretzel I've ever eaten. The mustard was excellent. Good try but,,, it was just a pretzel. My wife had the grilled shrimp salad. The shrimp was odd tasting (she didn't finish it) and the 'salad' was a bowl of escarole. My ribeye (ordered medium) was bloody, chewy, and covered in some type of sauce. I could never recommend this place, and we didn't. Someone staying at the same hotel asked about this place,, we sent them elsewhere.

Great place for a nice dinner in Bar Harbor. Crab cakes are not to be missed, nor is the steak!! Will definitely be back!!!

We are part of a large group of Boston Terrier devotees ( woofboard.com ) that have been visiting Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island since 2008. We ALWAYS have our farewell dinner at Jack Russell and have always had a good experience. Once again, the food and service were exemplary. Julie was terrific and made sure everything was the way we wanted it and to our liking. She was able to get our group into the room we desired with all our tables in close proximity. And when folks hear "large group", it's assumed that a prix fixe menu is needed so the fact that we could order off the menu as we had in the past was greatly appreciated. Leslie, our server, was pleasant, efficient, attentive AND (though handling our group on her own), fully capabable. What do I mean by "capable"? What I mean is: she got our orders correct, was able to handle split checks (rather than forcing the group to muddle through finding out who owed what) AND got all our dishes out at, more or less, the same time. But wait! Shouldn't ALL waitstaff be able to do this? Yes. But some can't or won't (look for the place in another review coming shortly). The food is simple but very, very good. They had a special that night so I treated myself to the 15oz, PRIME ribeye. I ordered mine rare and, at first, thought it might have been over-cooked (as did another member of our group) but, upon closer inspection, found it to be cooked perfectly and simply, yet excellently seasoned as well. The accompanying asparagus was tasty and roasty and the potato was just a baked potato. Was ya gonna screw THAT up? The steaks will not compare to a Keene's or Strip House in NYC or Luger's (so I am told) but that's appropriately reflected in the price and ambiance. We come to Maine to unwind and relax so there's no high end, white-glove service but that's what you want when you come here. A relaxed vibe and damned good food! If I lived here, I would come here SPECIFICALLY for the steak. I am a #craftbeer geek so I must also say that their IPA was pretty tasty as well so you can't go wrong with the drinks either. Other things worth mentioning that we noticed over the years but did not put into play this visit: Outdoor seating area. They are dog friendly (Jack Russel? Hellooo?) or were when we were here in '08 and allowed dogs outside on the patio. Upstairs private room for larger groups. We were there in '08 where an attendee did a reading from a book he was publishing but we didn't use that this time because another attendee needed wheelchair access (or, at least, minimal stairs). This gent did not show up however, which made Julie's efforts to secure the "Red Room" for us all the more commendable. Casual ambiance but not divey. Big bar. Thanks again to Julie, Tom and Leslie for your efforts and for making this a great experience. See you next time!

Do NOT go, no matter how desperate you are. it was evident as soon as we walked in that the staff did not have the place under control but we were staying across the street and didn't want to drive anywhere. they were not that busy so we couldn't figure out the true problem but we waited for everything! and when the food finally came it was awful. Half cooked steak, dried out crab cakes and what I think were asparagus as side dish. They were so overcooked they were mush. My kids wouldn't even eat the hummus appetizer it was so pasty and some weird slime- like topping they put on top.
(1)Gary B.
Nancy says the Cay Lime martini is excellent. I agree. I had a nice ribeye steak and Nancy had a Ceasars salad with salmon that she loved. A pleasant evening!
(3)Nicola R.
Awesome steak tips and wonderful sever! Also you get pretzels instead of bread which was pretty cool I have been here for the week and this was the second steak I have had was very well cooked and almost melted in my mouth!
(5)Andy P.
Absolutely exceptional surf and turf dinner! I was very impressed with their house-brewed IPA and Pale ale. The waitress/bar tender was extremely friendly. Probably our best meal in Maine that week. Will definitely dine at Jack Russell's again when in Bar Harbor. Thanks for having us!
(5)Holli P.
Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. Steaks cooked perfectly as ordered, fish was done well. Grilled asparagus was a great selection for the veg of the day. Service was also fantastic. A little overpriced, or not done quite right for the price. Maybe serve the butter and sour cream for the baked potato as scoops in small ramekins instead of prepackaged, disposable containers. That would more suit the price range.. Overall good experience.
(4)Doug P.
Burnt app burnt pretzels.. Steak was cooked well needed salt badly. Service was ok.. I wouldn't recommend it.. Over priced for average
(2)Shannon C.
We loved this place so much that we ate here multiple times during our trip to Bar Harbor. The crab cakes are absolutely the best I've ever had in my lifetime! The pretzel appetizers are a great change from the typical dinner rolls served at restaurants. The service was fabulous, and we particulary loved meeting the manager. I highly recommend this place. Just a heads up: during the busy season, I would recommend making reservations. The bar area gets crowded if you are waiting for an empty table.
(5)Bob B.
Went there (and came to Acadia) because they accept dogs.. They were nice about our dogs. The house 'pale ale' was skunky. The $3.99 fries appetizer were greasy and floppy. The asparagus was very thin and exceptionally tough. The au gratin potatoes were ok. Crab cakes were good and the India Pale Ale much better.
(2)Samantha B.
We love to go here thefood is awesome, the servers and everyone is so helpful and kind, and the atmosphere is so relaxed.
(5)Jay T.
Had an amazing dinner and amazing time. Love the hot freshly baked pretzels and mustard instead of bread. The medium rare ribeye with crab Oscar sauce was perfect. Veggie of the day was grilled asparagus. The IPA was fantastic. I want to find something negative or neutral to say so I don't sound like a drooling fangirl, but everything was good. Even the service was excellent. Will be back next time were here.

Worst Restaurant Experience EVER. Do NOT eat here! The short version: Extremely Lousy service Overcooked steak Owner or head chef/manager with an extremely bad attitude The longer version: We were visiting Bar Harbor on vacation and we were looking for a place to get a good steak and some lobster. We arrived and were promptly seated and given menus. 15 minutes later, someone came by to get our drink order. My lady asked for hot tea and I ordered iced tea. 15 minutes after that our drinks arrived, but the hot tea water was cold and therefore could not possibly have steeped tea. She sent the water back. 15 minutes later another, slightly hotter cup of water arrived but still inadequate to steep tea. So, she sent that back and just ordered some water. By the time she got her water, my iced tea had been empty for 15 minutes already and there had been no sign of our waitress. Upon asking for more tea, the waitress took my glass and did not return with a refill for another 10 minutes after that. If you're following the math here, we had been there 40 minutes and had not ordered dinner yet. I had a couple of menu questions which the waitress was unable to answer. I ordered a Ribeye cooked "rare plus". She ordered a female lobster (since she likes to eat the roe). The waitress did not know what to say about my Rare Plus order at which time I said, "Please just put that down. The kitchen should know what I mean". She also didn't know why we'd care whether we got a female or male lobster and so we had to explain that to her too. She LIVES in Lobster country and here we are, a couple of Floridians explaining the difference in a male and female lobster to this so-called high end steakhouse waitress. Really? As for the Rare Plus order, for those who don't know, Rare Plus is that spot between Rare and Medium-Rare where you have a slightly warm but still fully red center. I would excuse a chain restaurant for not knowing this but a self proclaimed steakhouse should know that. 20 minutes later (now at 60 minutes with my iced tea glass empty the whole time), our food arrived. The kitchen apparently at least knew how to find a female lobster (or they lucked out) because that was correct. My steak, however, was cooked to at least Medium well and so I sent it back and asked for more iced tea. Here's where it REALLY got bad. My lady had barely started her lobster when the waitress came back with our check. They had taken my steak off the bill and charged us for her lobster (which we did get). The waitress said that the chef was refusing to recook our steak and they wanted us to just pay the bill we had received already and that they "didn't want any more trouble", whatever that meant. I guess by "trouble" they mean that they didn't want to be bothered to cook my steak correctly, keep my iced tea glass full, or maybe even be able to bring hot water for hot tea. I told the waitress that I'd like to speak to the manager. The manager refused to come to our table! So, I walked up to the front of the restaurant and asked to speak to someone. At this point the chef (who may have been the owner as well) came out of the kitchen irate and his opening line to me was "Do I have to call the police?". I'm not sure where that came from, but he certainly wasn't in any mood to listen objectively to my concerns about the service or food. I asked what he meant with his threat to call the police and he said loudly "Are you going to pay that bill or do I have to call the police?". Really? I never said I wasn't paying (although I shouldn't have had to). I guess by walking up front, he thought I was going to bail (which we should have). So, we paid the bill that we received, left ZERO tip (imagine that) and went and ate somewhere else. Do NOT go here. Do NOT go here. Do NOT go here. There are many great restaurants in the Bar Harbor area. This is definitely not one of them.
(1)Bob Z.
There are three brewers in and around Bar Harbor. One is just a brewery, one is a brewer who also does barbeque, and then there is Jack Russell: a restaurant that also does brewing. If you come here for the brewer with the best food, you've made the right choice, at least I can say that as far as the steaks go. The seafood is probably great too, but I haven't tried it. The waitstaff in the restaurant portion of Jack Russell's was great: attentive and efficient. If you come here for the best beer in town, you may want to reconsider. Their best brewing efforts are average at best. And the bartender was surly. Maybe she was just having a bad night? This is the first brewpub I've tried where I'd advise avoiding the tap handles. Get a nice wine to go with your dinner.
(4)Meghan R.
The best steaks on Bar Harbor, warm inviting atmosphere, and a wonderful staff! My boyfriend and I so enjoyed the soft music that was being played that we got up and danced in the middle of the restaurant. We even went to the kitchen after our meal to express our appreciation for the food, which was much appreciated because the chef is also the owner! We had a lovely time and highly recommend the variety of steaks here to anyone vacationing in Bar Harbor!
(4)Victoria W.
Went for dinner, staff was nice enough. However, food took over 30 minutes and we were the only other table in restaurant. We both had steaks, that were quite bland. Not horrible, but not great.
(3)Richard N.
What can we say? We left the restaurant hungry and a light wallet. Dining experience was so...so. Small tables and not much elbow room. The food tasted good , but the portions were not in line with the prices. Sorry to leave a negative review... Hopefully, our feedback will help improve this restaurant.
(2)Derek T.
We've been her three times and it's always good. Unlike many of the reviews suggest, the service has always been prompt and good. Steaks are really good and reasonably priced. The kids love it to. The warm pretzels are great.
(5)Dawn M.
Our dinner there was one of the highlights of our trip to Bar Harbor. The crab cakes are a must try appetizer and the sampler plate is a wonderful dinner. Definitely try the blueberry beer but most of all their blueberry pie is the best in town. Hands down. This place is a must go when you visit Bar Harbor.
(5)Megan S.
Full disclosure: We didn't order any steak. We were incredibly impressed with the waitstaff and beer. Our Bar Harbor Brewery samplers were quite a bit larger than what I'd call a sampler and we even got a free pretzel to absorb all the alcohol. Our salads and apps were just a bit lack luster, but the beer made up for it!
(4)J G.
Below mediocre beer (unhopped IPA), long waits, and uninspired, bland food. Don't bother with them. Going downhill for a few years now.

This place was recommended to us for clam chowder by the place we were staying at in Salsbury Cove. She said, "I hate to admit it, but most restaurants in Bar Harbor use soup out of a bag. Jack Russell's makes their own." That sealed the deal, and off we went. We were greeted by the owner as soon as we got there, and he led us to a cute table on the upstairs outdoor seating area that had a view of the water. He was super friendly, checking on us periodically. You can tell the guy is very proud of his business, as he clearly enjoys it. My husband and I started off by ordering two stouts. At first taste we thought they tasted weird, but they grew on us. I would recommend trying something else, though (probably the brown ale). It did go well with the pretzels. We both ordered a bowl of the clam chowder. My husband had fish and chips in addition, and I had the crab cake appetizer. The crab cakes were delicious - nicely seasoned, slightly peppery, and with a nice outside that wasn't overly greasy. The clam chowder tasted like home, and I love that. No mistaking it was homemade! Fish and chips looked like nothing special to me, but husband devoured it. For dessert we split a huge slice of blueberry pie a la mode. Once again...tasted like home! Great end to a meal. If you like homey-style food with friendly service, I would definitely recommend this place. The food isn't fancy, but it is delicious (from what we experienced) and gets a solid 3.5 stars from me. The excellent service bumps it up to a 4.
(4)Steve W.
Fantastic!! Food was prepared perfectly and service was top notch. Sat at the bar, the beer (Brown) was smooth, cesaer salad was great and the filet melted in your mouth. The bartender was informative on the local things to do and see
(5)Gretchen S.
Walking into the Jack Russell you just want to love the place but after the experience you are not so much in love more on a ehhh basis. We did not eat here we came for a beer and snack. The IPA beer was good but the Stout was pretty gross. The do serve pretzels instead of bread of you want but they are the kind of pretzels you can microwave at home. The people next to us returned the Clam Chowder since they said it was pretty bad, that made me not want to order any food. How can clam chowder be bad??? But they do have a large flat screen tv if you want to grab a mix drink or bottle beer to watch a game later on after dinner.
(2)Gary R.
Cool little stop for better food than the beer in Bar Harbor. I was hoping for some great beers, but the IPA here is the only thing I sampled that was worth another helping.
(2)Gerard S.
Good for quick bite.not great not bad good! Don't get there late you'll be turned away but fast!!!
(3)B J.
We really loved our dinner there. We stayed across the street at the Atlantic Oceanside and so could walk there and avoid busy downtown Bar Harbor. We enjoyed our waiter who was funny and attentive and the food was terrific. Has a cozy feeling.
(5)MK L.
While in for a quick drink we were convinced by the staff that the steaks served there were "the best". On that recommendation we agreed to return for dinner, especially since the very kind waitstaff said they would be serving the best of the best... prime beef for that evening's entree choices. Now the entire building was very tired and dark and, well, not very attractive. But hey, don't judge a book by its cover, right? We have enjoyed some of our best dining experiences in establishments looking much worse. Moving on... we had reservations and were seated, by choice, on the upstairs deck. Well, the walk to our table looked as if we were going through a construction zone. Upon arriving at our table we noticed plywood covering rotting sections of the decking. A bit unsettling, to say the least. Bread service is soft pretzels served on a glass plate with a dipping sauce. No basket, no napkin or anything to make the presentation appealing. The caesar salad was served with a very tasty dressing (maybe house made, maybe not) on "not fresh" greens. Our steaks arrived next. While the doneness was perfect, there was absolutely no flavor. It was not juicy - it was not seasoned AT ALL. The baked potato was delivered in foil, as was the butter. For me, that is never a good sign. At the risk of sounding snobby, when I go to a steak house I expect whipped butter in glass dishes, napkins in a bread basket, a tablecloth or at least a placemat. I ordered coffee and it was barely warm. Creamer was set out on a plate and no spoon was available. Sigh... The price would be considered reasonable if the food was good but since it was an overall poor dining experience I'd have to say the price would be high. I expect to pay $30 to $40 for a great filet mignon. This was the $25 special. Not very special at all.

We are native Mainers and not fancy people. Our expectations were for a decent meal and reasonable service. Neither of these were met by the staff of Jack Russell's. it almost seems like the owners/managers had a good idea at one time but have simply given up. The young kid who served us was trying, but it appeared that he had not been properly trained. He was super nervous probably from having to deal with so many complaints about the food. Among my chief issues with this place... - No children's menu was offered to our 11 year old, - over half of the 8oz sirloin was tough and gristly - we were greeted with a bit of an attitude - the upper deck where we were seated carried with it the smell of overripe dumpster. - salad greens were brown and slimy - food was not as described on the menu - cooked, slimy onions on a salad (just wrong). The place seemed run down and unloved. There are so many better places to eat in the area, don't waste your time, money or appetite on this one.
(1)Yingxia W.
This place gets three stars just for saving us from being starving tourists on a Saturday night. We had called quite a few restaurants that closed at exactly 9pm, but this one was thankfully open until 9:30. The fourth star is for decent seafood, free pretzels, and a cute outdoor eating area.
(4)Beverly W.
Nice bar, great service and friendly staff. We just had a few appetizers and they were awesome. If the appetizers were that good, I am sure the food is too. Some people at the bar had steaks and they did look great. The local beer served was a hit with my husband. Recommend for a nightcap or a small meal.
(4)Pete S.
We had an outstanding dinner with friends recently. The small filets cut with a butter knife. The onion rings were great and the Caesar Salads were very good. After many years of visiting Bar Harbor this was our first visit to Jack Russell. It won't be our last.
(5)Joe P.
Decor is pretty outdated, and starting to get old and run down. The tenderloin tips were good, but the side dishes were exceptionally small. They gave me two small roasted potatoes, and 3 skinny pieces of asparagus. It was hardly a filling meal. The ribeye steak was excellent, and was served with 1 baby potato and half of another with 3 asparagus. We would have been satisfied if the fillers were more. This is not a fancy place trying to get fancy by giving too little. The server who was also the bartender was unattentive, and didn't check on us until the end of the meal.
